Sukeban Deka is a popular Manga series that was created by Shinji Wada. The Sukeban Deka character has been adapted into an Anime series, a live action T.V. series and T.V. movie. There has also been three feature films starting with the 1987 film titled Sukeban Deka, Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters and the most recent adaptation being Yo-Yo Girl Cop.

The plot for Sukeban Deka and Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters are inter changeable as both deal with high school girls known as Sukeban Deka’s who work for an undercover government organization. In each film the story revolves around a now retired Sukeban Deka who is forced back into action when those close to her are put in danger. Both films also revolve around a criminal mastermind who is plotting to overthrow the government. These criminal masterminds also use similar methods to further their goals as they brainwash and manipulate impressionable youths. Despite the formulaic nature of both stories they both approach the material in a tongue and cheek way that only further draws you into the story.

The film is filled with wall to wall action. Both films are also populated with colorful and at times sadistic nemesis. There is also an interesting array of weapons used in the film like Yo Yo’s, marbles and metallic Origami’s used like throwing stars. The most memorable weapon appears in the first film when the lead character is given a special Yo Yo that is so powerful that excessive use can cause permanent damage to her shoulder due to its massive kick back after it hits a target.

The first film Sukeban Deka holds up better than its sequel Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters which feels like to much of rehash of the first film. The second film also takes on a much darker tone then the first film. The  most memorable performance out of the two films is Yôko Minamino who plays the lead in the first film. She is underused and regulated to a secondary character in Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters. For the second film Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters the lead role is given to Yui Asaka who also appeared in the first Sukeban Deka film. Another performance of note is Hiroyuki Nagato who portrayed the role of Dark Director. He would reprise the Dark Director for a third time in the film Yo Yo Girl Cop. Ultimately Sukeban Deka and Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters, are two highly entertaining action films that fans of Pinky Violence and Manga inspired films are sure to enjoy.

The DVD:

Both Sukeban Deka and Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters, are both presented in anamorphic widescreen presentations which preserve their original aspect ratios. All around both transfers have nicely saturated colors, natural looking flesh tones, solid black levels and details looks crisp throughout. This release one misstep is that both films are interlaced and not flagged for progressive playback. There are some minor instances of blurring during action sequences and scenes with heavy movement.

Both films come with one audio option a Dolby Digital mono mix in Japanese and removable English subtitles have been provided. The audio mix included with each film sounds clear, evenly balanced and at times dynamic. There are no problems with distortion or any other audio defects.

Extras for Sukeban Deka include two trailers for the film, a photo gallery (32 images) and trailers for other films also available on DVD from Tokyo Shock. Rounding out the extras is a forty two minute making of documentary that is narrated by the films lead actress Yôko Minamino. Extras for Sukeban Deka 2: Counter-Attack from the Kazama Sisters include two trailers for the film, a photo gallery (15 images) and trailers for other films also available on DVD from Tokyo Shock. Rounding out the extras is a forty four minute making of documentary titled “Yui’s Dairy”. Both making of documentaries are essentially production dairies which give an in depth look into what went on behind the scenes from pre-production through the final day of shooting. Overall Tokyo Shock’s Sukeban Deka 2 Pack is another affordable repacking of titles that had been previously released separately by them.
