Synopsis: Franco is a Horney teenage boy that has nothing but sex on his mind. Franco and his two friends are always up to no good at school and one day that are sent to the gym teacher Professor Puntiglio for punishment. One of the boys makes a farting sound when Professor Puntiglio bends over which brings upon him a great deal of embarrassment. Professor Puntiglio wanting justice for what the three boys did to him threatens to reveal all the shady deals the principal has been part of to the public if the boys are not suspended. To get the gym teacher off his back he hires Professor Puntiglio’s fiancée Giovanna (Edwige Fenech) as Franco’s personal tutor. Franco immediately becomes infatuated with Giovanna and he is willing to just about anything even pretend that he is gay just to get her to sleep with him.

Edwige Fenech is billed as the star of the film when her role is nothing more then a secondary part and she doesn’t even arrive until the films second act. Despite her limited role the truth is that without Fenech and her sex appeal there really isn’t that much else in the film that really stands out. Fenech has made a career out of doing characters like Giovanna that are short in substance and have an enormous amount of beauty. Beauty may only be skin deep; still I challenge any man to look at Mrs. Fenech’s luscious legs and not fall head over heels for her. This film does see Fenech in an unusual love affair. While in most of her films she usually falls in love with men that are older then her in this film she falls for what just might be one of her youngest lovers to appear on screen with her. Even though the film takes place in a high school this film deals with its prevalent sexual themes in a mature adult way which is a refreshing thing to see while so many of today’s films are geared towards a younger audiences and therefore sanitized. There is plenty of comedy and enough sexual innuendo in this film to keep you fixated to what is going on for the films duration.

The films comedic moments at times border on slapstick like when Peppino helps Professor Cali take off his ripped pants while he is wearing them during class. The School Teacher is an expertly directed film that has a wonderful cast who look like they are enjoying themselves. The film is filled with a cast of eccentric characters like the sexy maid with a body to die for only two problems she has a unibrow and a mustache. One of the best lines in the film involves the maid and her psychical appearance. Franco is taking provocative pictures of the rest of her body while she covers her face. She asks him after words why he didn’t take any of her face and he replies “I don’t shot pornography”. Then there is the gym teacher Professor Puntiglio who Edwige Fenech’s character is supposed to be in love with who one almost wonders if he is gay as he does just about everything he can to avoid physical contact with his fiancée. The gym teacher also looks like a mess next to Fenech with his portly figure, frizzy afro like hair and Hitler like mustache.

The DVD:

Alpha Digital presents The School Teacher in an anamorphic widescreen that preserves the films original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Colors look strong with some minor room for improvement. Black levels look good with details looking sharper during foreground shots then they do on background shots. There is some mild edge enhancement and a few times the image looks a bit too soft. This DVD is interlaced and I also suspect that it might be a PAL to NTSC conversion because the DVD box claims the films running time is 94 minutes when it is actually 89 minutes. Overall while not up to the standards of Blue Underground or No Shame I was still pleasantly surprised just how good this DVD’s transfer is.

The release comes with only one audio option the films original English dubbed audio mix which is presented for this release in a Dolby Digital mono. The dialog and soundtrack as a whole is clean, still the dialog at times sounds to thing and the music and effects sound distorted.

Extras for this release consist of a trailer for the film in Italian and its original aspect ratio. Unfortunately it is only in Italian and comes with no English subtitles. Other extras include an extensive bio for Edwige Fenech that comes with a selected filmography. The Fenech bio is the most extensive piece that I read to date about her and it is well written and insightful. Rounding out the is a Edwige Fenech photo gallery that contains various lobby cards, posters and of course nude photo’s of the lovely Mrs. Fenech. This extra plays like a featurette as music from the film plays in the background and it is about three minutes in length. Overall Alpha Digital The School Teacher release is must have if you a Edwige Fenech fan and until a definitive DVD for this film comes along this DVD is a more then adequate substitute.
