Sex Roulette is an oddity; a Belgian/German co-production with a largely French cast, dubbed in English and featuring a schizophrenic story and style. The plot is relatively simple, as the film follows a rich lord and his niece traversing their way across the Riviera casino scene. Sin, sex and general weirdness abound as the film inundates its viewers with rapid fire hardcore scenes inter-cut with European travelogue footage and some bizarre dream sequences.
It’s the humorous English dub which keeps Sex Roulette from becoming tedium, however, as the dubbing actors are clearly running fast and loose with the material. Director Alan Vydra clearly has comedy in mind here, and directs most of the absurdity involving the lord, niece and their little person assistant as a bevy of nameless adult actors filter in and out (no pun intended) of the proceedings.
Vydra also has his hands in the horror cookie jar, as well, as a dark and foreboding dream sequence seems to appear out of nowhere around three-quarters of the way through the film. In it, the lord and assistant are holding some sort of black mass sacrifice as they imagine themselves their ready pregnant maid-here dressed as a nun-up as a satanic offering. It’s nowhere near in line with the rest of the film, and just one of the reasons why Sex Roulette is so curious.
That isn’t to say that the film is a real success, however, as it’s virtually inter-changeable with any number of Alpha France films being cranked out from France at a rapid rate. Still, for those who follow the Impulse Pictures line, you’re not likely going to find Sex Roulette on DVD anywhere else, which in itself makes this one at least worth trip down Eurotrash lane.
Impulse Pictures presents Sex Roulette in a 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation, sourced from the original vault materials. The colors are bright and nicely rendered, considering this film’s age and rarity, with only a modicum of print damage showing up during its running time. The dubbed dialogue doesn’t sound hissy or distorted, with all of bad jokes and awkward asides intact for all to hear. There are no extras here, resulting in a solid outing by Impulse Pictures, in line with their previous discs.
