Synopsis:A drug addicted, successful fetish photographer with an insatiable sex drive, falls prey to his obsessions. The plot is as bare bones as these soft-core sex films get. There is minimal amount of dialog and story setup in between the long drawn out photo shoots / sex scenes. At just over an hour in length one would think that pacing should never be an issues and yet it is. Most of this could be attributed to the fact this film never manages to gin any momentum. And while countless other soft core films have padded themselves with sexually related scenes. Very few have had the audacity to do so in such an un-erotic way as this film does.

Performance wise the cast are in line with what one would expect from other film’s of this ilk. At least this film does one thing right, it has an attractive female cast that give this film a much needed shot of eye candy. The only performance of note is Tina Krause (Psycho Sisters, Blood for the Muse) under the alias Mia Copia. Though her role is limited to only one scene. She makes the most of it and nearly gives this film its only worthwhile moment. Ultimately a film about fetish models in various stages of undress should at least be visually appealing and somewhat arousing and yet it somehow manages to fail miserably in both of these regards.

The DVD:

The Sex Merchants is presented in an anamorphic widescreen that retains the film’s original aspect. The image looks crisp, colors and flesh tones look accurate and there are no problems with compression.

This release comes with one audio option, a Dolby Digital stereo mix in English. The audio sounds clean, clear and balanced throughout.

Extras for this release are limited to trailers for Diary of a Sex Offender (also directed by John Niflheim), Defiled and Faces of Schlock. Overall The Sex Merchants gets a good audio / video presentation.
