The art of the “erotic re-imaginings” was nothing new in 1980. X-rated editions of Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland and, indeed, Al Adamson’s 1977 space adventure Cinderella 2000 had already enjoyed success in drive-ins across the country when this Fred Lincoln-directed take on Cinderella story was originally released, so there was probably little surprise when Lincoln’s pornographic fairy tale greeted the raincoat crowd on New York’s 42nd Street.
Lincoln’s sex-heavy style of filmmaking ensures that very little of Serena’s brief running time is devoted to plot, story or adhering to anything but the most basic of Cinderella tenets as the film leaps lightly from one hardcore sequence to another, narrated with glazed over haze by the wooden China Leigh in her default “fairy godmother” character. The film’s titular star of Serena is indeed beautiful, displaying enthusiasm in her performance, while the ever-reliable Jamie Gillis is a laugh riot in his leather hat get-up early on in the film.
Serena-An Adult Fairy Tale is directed primarily at those who prefer as little plot in their porn as possible—the entire story taking place within the confines of a single house—representing a stylistic shift from the genre’s golden age into an era where the industry’s video explosion was clear upon the horizon.
The DVD:
Impulse Pictures presents Serena-An Adult Fairy Tale as a clear, full screen presentation which seems to preserve the film’s original framed image. Colors are clear, with age-related dust and debris which do not detract from the viewing experience. The sound is also clear, without any noticeable drop outs. There are no extras included within this release other than chapter stops, which lends Serena a basic, bare bones presentation from Impulse Pictures.
