Content wise, Not Suitable for Children takes themes that have been the backbone of numerous romantic comedies, most notably the need to conceive a child before the biological chance has passed by. But unlike other films that anchored its story around this plot device, Not Suitable for Children turns everything on its head by making its protagonist male.
In film that relies heavily on surprises through the use of misdirection. It should not come as a surprise what starts off as your run of the mill ‘coming of age’ story. That if you look past the superficial aspects of this film, there is a story that resonates long after its final surprise pops up abruptly before the end credits.
Though the film does often alternate between more comedy driven moments and heartfelt moments. One should not under value the humor that drives the majority of this films narrative. With some of more humorous moments involving the protagonists search for the woman who will bear his child. Let’s just say that there are those who realize what he is trying to do may not be best for him and they do their best to dissuade perspective candidates from taking him up on his offer.
The satisfying balance of humor and melodrama make all of the performances in this film all the more engaging. With this film’s strongest performance coming from Sarah Snook in the role of Stevie, she is the protagonists best friend and he ends up falling in love with her.
Not Suitable for Children comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive anamorphic widescreen. The overall quality of the image looks very good, the image looks faithful to this film’s intended look and there are no problems with compression.
This release comes with two audio options, a DTS-HD 5.1 mix in English and a Dolby Digital Stereo mix in English and removable English subtitles have also been included with this release. Though this is primarily a dialog driven film, both of these audio mixes sound surprisingly full when they need to and they do a superb job with the more ambient aspects of soundtrack.
Extras for this release include a trailer for the film (2 minutes 23 seconds – anamorphic widescreen), a ‘Making of’ featurette (14 minutes 23 seconds – anamorphic widescreen) that includes comments from the cast & crew and a collection of interviews with co-screenwriter / director Peter Templeman actors Ryan Kwanten and Ryan Corr, actress Sarah Snook (58 minutes 11 seconds – anamorphic widescreen), who discuss the screenplay, the cast & the characters they portray in the film.
