The bulk of Porn King is the documentation of a court case between Al Goldstein and his former secretary. The documentary as a whole gives a balanced overview of the good and bad sides of Al Goldstein one of porn most tragic figures. Goldstein formed the porn publication Screwed in 1968 and in no time he became a lighting rod for controversy. In the early 1970’s he would be indicted a total of nineteen times for various obscenities charges.
He would go from being a staunch fighter of the first amendment to completely losing sight of what he was fighting for anymore. Like all stories of figures who have climbed to the top of their profession this one ends on a done beat note as Goldstein has lost nearly everything and now lives in poverty. Al Goldstein is ultimately a man who had no self control and this in the end is what done him in.
The DVD:
Porn King is presented in its original aspect ratio and it is anamorphic enhanced. This shot on video documentary boasts strong detail as the image remains stable through out. Colors and flesh tones look accurate. There are no problems with compression, artifacts and edge enhancement is kept to a minimum.
This release comes with one audio option English and it is in a Dolby Digital stereo. Dialog is crisp and there are no problems with hiss, distortion or any other sound defects.
The only extra that comes with this release is titled “Last Days of Midnight Blue” which is essentially forty five minutes of Al Goldstein ranting and raving. His outbursts become repetitive after a while, still it is fascinating seeing someone deteriorate right before your eyes.
The fifth volume of Midnight blue while following a different format then the previous four volumes is just as captivating if for nothing more then the in-depth look into the rise and fall of Al Goldstein.
