Synopsis:Maraschino Cherry (Gloria Leonard) is a high priced Madame who is visited one day by her little sister who wants to learn the business and set up her own escort service.By the time Radley Metzger made his final XXX feature film Maraschino Cherry he had all but run out of ideas and inspiration. The film feels like it was pieced together from left over material that wasn’t used from Metzger’s previous films. The scenes with actress Constance Money are most definitely left over scenes from her previous film with Radley Metzger, The Opening of Misty Beethoven. Direction wise this is the most un-erotic film of Radley Metzger’s career. Many of Metzger’s films are known for their offbeat humor and witty dialog and this is about the only thing that saves Maraschino Cherry from being a total disaster. Two of my favorite bits are a man who comes every time he sneezes and a woman who is whipped and used as a human clock.
Many of the top XXX actress/actors of the era including Gloria Leonard, Leslie Bovee, Annette Haven, Constance Money, C.J. Laing, Jenny Baxter, Penny Cherry, Wade Nichols, Susan McBain and Eric Edwards appear in the film making the performances and the story more enjoyable then it could have been in the hands of lesser performers. The best sex scene is without a doubt the night club scene with Annette Haven and the most memorable scene is the S&M torture scene near the end of the film with C.J. Laing. Maraschino Cherry is not a good film by any means still it doesn’t help that nearly eleven minutes of footage is missing from the film and for a more detailed list of the cuts go here. Overall I expected a far better film from Radley Metzger and it is shame that Maraschino Cherry ends up being his swan song from adult cinema.
Maraschino Cherry like many of Henry Paris’ adult films were shot on super 16 MM and then blow up to 35 MM which frames the compositions at about a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This release looks like it was sourced from a 35mm print. The framing though partially letterboxed looks slightly off and there is an enormous amount of print damage present throughout. Overall the transfer is ruff and beaten, still it is more then watch able.
This release comes with only one audio source an English language track which is presented in a Dolby Digital mono. The audio like the video has seen better days as there is noticeable hiss and other minor sound defects present during playback. Dialog sounds a tad thin and the volume might need to be adjusted at times.
The only extra that come with this release is a trailer for the Harry Reems film Bel Ami which is currently available on DVD via Video X Pix.
Video X Pix DVD for Maraschino Cherry Radley Metzger’s final XXX feature is a mess as the source material has seen better days and the main feature is a censored version which is missing nearly eleven minutes of footage.
