Troma Team presents two more Japanese films starring former JAV idol (censored adult film star) Miyuki Yokoyama.
Weekend is directed by Yoshikazu Ishii (Cool Dimension) and is yet another abduction / rape / humiliation / revenge drama. Miyuki plays the naive and innocent Miki pretty well and the three abductors are interesting in their character parts. As compared to Camp from Vol. 1, Weekend plays more like a theatrical film then a video quickie. There is more emphasis on a complete story arc and the tale unfolds in a serious manner without any overt comic relief. The bad guys are still a bit ‘larger than life’, but then they are psychotic miscreants, after all.
Lipstick is helmed by Ainosuke Shibata from Vol. 1 (Camp / Hitch-hike) and he stretches out a bit from the standard formula of these things. Here he presents a psychological thriller featuring a popular model and talk show guest whose fans sometimes become a bit obsessive; rather reminiscent of Seijun Suzuki’s A Tale of Sorrow (A Tale of Sadness). One of those is a cop who saves her from assault, he then becomes decidedly unhinged but in a rather detached way; much like Anthony Wong when he goes into deeply depraved mode (Ebola Syndrome, Taxi Hunter). There are some rather innovative ideas in this one as well . . .
. . .such as forcing her to swallow a GPS tracker during the first rape. Also interesting is that the trailer for Weekend appears on television while maniac cop guy is slurping his instant noodles.
Anamorphic transfers of both features in Japanese with English subtitles. Troma release trailers are included. The subtitles lag a bit toward the end of each feature which is likely due to format conversion.
Weekend achieves it’s modest goal in a fairly accomplished manner, no mean feat given the limited cast of four persons. Lipstick is far more ambitious and nuanced than the usual video nasty torture porn fare. From Asia With Lust Volume 2 is a very satisfying release.
