Just Desserts is a documentary about author Stephen King and director George A. Romero’s 1982 feature film collaboration Creepshow.
The well-constructed narrative starts off with a discussing about EC Comics from the 1950’s from there each phase of this film production is explored in great detail. Needless to say that no stone is left unturned.
Also though the majority of the talent involved in front and behind the camera are in involved in this documentary. There is one glaring absentee, Stephen King. Fortunately, there is wealth of information that can be gleaned from those who did participate in the documentary and King’s lack of involvement becomes an afterthought.
Another strength of this documentary is the way that it incorporates Tom Savini’s “Behind the Scenes” footage into the grander scheme of things. With the standout footage being anything related to the special effects. Overall Just Desserts is an exceptional documentary that contains everything you ever wanted to know about the film Creepshow.
Just Desserts comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. Though the bulk of the footage was specifically shot for this documentary. This documentary also uses archival footage which comes from a wide variety of sources that vary in degree quality wise. With that being said, this is a well authored disc and there are no issues with compression.
This release comes with one audio option, a DTS- HD stereo mix in English and included with this release is removable English SDH subtitles. Once again the sources that comes from a lesser quality master do not sound as good as the bulk of the newly shot footage. Dialog always comes through clearly and everything sounds balanced.
Extras for this release include, Behind the Scenes Creepshow photo gallery (14 minutes 55 seconds), vintage Evening Magazine segment from 1982 (7 minutes 30 seconds) , Extended Interview’s (23 minutes 45 seconds), Tom Savini’s Behind the Screams (26 minutes 28 seconds), Creepshow Day with Michael Gornick (8 minutes), Scream Greats Volume One: Tom Savini, Master of Horror Effects with Optional Audio Commentary with Tom Savini (52 minutes 54 seconds) and two audio commentaries; the first audio commentary with Director & Editor Michael Felsher and the second audio commentary featuring interviews with Actor John Amplas, Property Master Bruce Alan Miller, and Make-Up Effects Assistant Darryl Ferrucci.
Besides the exceptional main feature, this release also comes with a wealth of extra content that adds further depth to the subject matter at hand. Overall Just Desserts gets a solid release from Synapse Films, highly recommended.
