IP Man 3 was directed by Wilson Yip who also directed IP Man and IP Man 2. Other notable films also directed by Wilson Yip include, Kill Zone and Flash Point. Key collaborators on who worked on IP Man 3 include, action director Woo-Ping Yuen (The Matrix), cinematographer Kenny Tse (Beast Stalker) and composer Kenji Kawai, he worked on all three IP Man films that were directed by Wilson Yip.
IP Man 3 would mark Donnie Yen’s (Kung Fu Killer) third time portraying titular character. And time line wise though the narrative focuses on later third of his life. This film does not do so far as touching upon IP Man’s final years in mainland China.
Content wise, the film follows a similar structure as its predecessors with an oppression entity imposing their will on those who cannot defend themselves and this then forces IP Man to jump into action to eradicate all evildoers. The main nemesis for IP Man in this latest installment is a land developer named Frank and he is perfectly portrayed by the ever so menacing Mike Tyson. Also behind ever ruthless land developer there are always bound to be an ample of henchmen to do his bidding.
And though there is a good verse evil angle at play throughout this film. It is ultimately a wild card character named Cheung Tin-chi who finds that rare balanced between the two sides. Whatever side benefits him is the one that he aligns himself with.
Action set pieces once again play a large role in the story at hand and though this film features a different action director than its predecessors. The end result is the by far and away the most spectacular fights scenes to appear in a IP Man film to date. A few standout moments include, the fight scene IP Man and Frank and the jaw dropping finale where IP Man faces off against Cheung Tin-chi. Overall IP Man 3 is a solid action film that stands on its own apart from its predecessors.
IP Man 3 comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. Details look crisp, colors and flesh tones look accurate, black and contrast levels remain strong throughout. Also there are no issues with DNR or compression.
This release comes with four audio options, a DTS-HD 5.1 mix in Cantonese, a DTS-HD 5.1 mix in English, a DTS-HD 5.1 mix in Spanish and a DTS-HD 5.1 mix in French.
