Synopsis: A salesclerk has second thoughts about marrying his girlfriend after taking advice from a Casanova professor.

The Inveterate Bachelor was co-written and directed by Giorgio Bianchi whose other notable films include Love, the Italian Way and Insurance on a Virgin. The plot revolves around a salesclerk named Marcello who is engaged to marry a girl named Gina. All is well that is until he lets his friend a professor to get into his head. Without giving too much more away about the plot, the bulk of what occurs involves a major twist that reveals itself in the final act.

The film starts off slowly and kick into overdrive once the professor puts seeds of doubt into Marcello. The comedy is a satisfying mix of verbal jabs and psychical comedy. The film’s most memorable scene is when Marcello is forced to sleep in dingy in the bathroom and a leaky faucet floods the room and he wakes up in the room full of water. Another memorable moment is when Marcello who is hiding in a portable wardrobe ends up in the wrong apartment when it is delivered to another home.

The Inveterate Bachelor features a strong cast that includes director Vittorio De Sica and María Luz Galicia in the role of Marcello’s fiancee Gina. The film’s standout performance comes from Walter Chiari who is cast in the film’s lead role of Marcello. He performance perfectly captures the anxieties that a prospective groom often is faced with. Some of Walter Chiari’s other notable performances include Wives and Obscurities, Love, the Italian Way, The Maniacs and Chimes at Midnight. Ultimately The Inveterate Bachelor is a delirious farce about relationships.
