After a five stint in as co-lead vocalist of the legendary Goth Rock band Christian Death Gitane Demone would go out on her as a solo artist. Cult Epics DVD release Gitane Demone: Life after Death is a collection of rare clips and performances that chronicles Gitane Demone musical output in-between 1988-1998. The segments included for this release are as follows “The Dark Side of Life” VPRO, Dutch Television 1991, Mazzo, Amsterdam, Holland 1989, AT5, Dutch Television 1992, VPRO Radio, Holland 1993, ISC Club, Bern, Switzerland 1993, Indie Tour, Querfurt, Germany 1995, A Heavenly Melancholy video clip 1991, Skin Two, UK 1992, “Fetish Generation”, Denmark 1995, Dream Home Heartache Tour featuring Rozz Williams 1995, Christian Death featuring Rozz Williams and Gitane Demone, Astoria II, London, UK 1996 and Kato, Berlin 1998.
Two of the lengthier pieces included with this collection a TV Special titled “The Dark Side of Life” and a documentary titled “Fetish Generation”. Both of these segments include background and in depth comments from Gitane Demone about her musical influences and the progressive of her career. Also the live performances with her former Christian Death band member Rozz Williams is another one of this collections highlights. Ultimately Gitane Demone: Life after Death is a fascinating journey that does superb job showcasing Gitane Demone’s daring style, dominating stage presence and distinctive singing voice.
The DVD:
All the content included on the two DVD’s that comprise Gitane Demone: Life after Death in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The footage comprises of clips from TV appearances, live performances and promo clips. The quality various with the first few segments being in the worst shape with the majority of the better looking segments on the second DVD. Overall despite the limitations of the source material all the segments are watchable and none of the flaws are ever distracting.
This release comes with one audio option a Dolby Digital stereo mix in English. Overall this audio mix does a good considering the limitations of the source.
Extras for this release include a twelve page booklet that includes four text pieces written by Gitane Demone. Also included with this release is a bonus CD titled “Times” which features twelve previously unreleased songs. Each DVD allows you to watch all the clips via a play all option or you can scene select individual scenes. This release is housed in a digi pack that houses the two DVD’s, booklet and bonus music CD.
Overall Cult Epics have put together an impressive release that does a superb job showcasing Gitane Demone’s post Christian Death musical output.
