Flower and Snake 3: Punishment was directed by Shogoro Nishimura who also directed two other Flower and Snake films, Flower and Snake: Sketch of Hell and Flower and Snake 4: White Uniform Rope Slave. The screenplay for Flower and Snake 3: Punishment was written by Masahiro Kakefuda whose other notable screenwriting credits include, Horrors of Malformed Men, Sex & Fury, Convent of the Sacred Beast, Sister Streetfighter and Sex Hunter.
Flower and Snake 3: Punishment is loosely based on the Oniroku Dan novel Flower and Snake (Hana To Hebi). Previous incarnations of Flower and Snake had plots that revolved around a jealous husband and blackmailers. This time around the plot for Flower and Snake 3: Punishment is a tale about a man who on the brink of financial ruin begs a former business partner to help him out. When spurned by his former business partner. He decides to take away the thing the matters most to his former business partner the man’s wife. Even though the players within the story are different, the core of Oniroku Dan’s novel is kept intact.
Visually the film features a few standout set pieces most notable a scene where Shizuko is forced by her captors to drink water until she is bloated and ready to urinate. The sex scenes are all intricately laid out and photographed. There are a few instances of digital fogging during the sex scenes. These are very minor and brief. The film’s most memorable performance is the actress who portrays’ the character named Chiyo (Shizuko’s maid). Chiyo’s jealously of Shizuko and the evolution of her character is this film’s strongest asset. Ultimately while there is plenty to enjoy in Flower and Snake 3: Punishment, the end result in not as perverse and inventive as its predecessor Flower and Snake: Sketch of Hell.
Panorama presents Flower and Snake 3: Punishment, in an anamorphic widescreen that preserves the film’s original aspect ratio. The image looks colorful, detailed and edge enhancement is kept to a minimum. Overall this is another well rounded transfer from Panorama that is on par with their transfer for Flower and Snake: Sketch of Hell.
This release comes with one audio option a Dolby Digital stereo mix in Japanese. Two subtitles options have been included English and Chinese. Even though the subtitles are easy enough to follow, there are a few instances where the translation comes off sounding awkward. Overall the audio is more than satisfactory as it sounds clear, evenly balanced and is free of any audio defects.
This release is a bare bones affair that comes with a static menu that has three options, play the film, chapter selection and subtitle options. Overall despite the lack of extra content this is another strong release from Panorama.
