When one thinks of British cinema from the 1960’s and 1970’s, the Horror genre instantly springs to mind. And while there is no doubt that the horror genre was during this time frame British cinema’s bread and butter. There was one genre that at peaks more than held its own at box office and that genre was sexploitation. Unfortunately, over the years’ time has not been kind to this genre and it was not until recently that this genre has and its legacy has been given its just due.
For Men Only: On the advice of fiancé, a journalist who works for a women’s fashion magazine takes on a less proactive job at a magazine that is known for their wholesome.
From a production standpoint this film there are not any areas where this film is lacking. The basic narrative is just enough to keeps things moving along from moment to the next. And at forty minutes in length pacing is never an issues as this film never overstays its welcome. The performances range from adequate to very good. With this film’s standout performance coming from David Kernan in the role of this film’s protagonist Freddie Horne.
Another strength of this film is its ability to mix sex and comedy. And nowhere is this more evident than when it comes to this film’s main twist where the protagonist takes on what appears on the surface the morally more acceptable job at Puritan magazine group. Of course things are not always as they seem and from there this sets up this film’s payoff.
School for Sex: When a series of less than successful marriages leaves a wealthy playboy in financial trouble. He concocts up an idea to run a finishing school where he can teach young woman the art of seduction.
Trying to capture the essence of what made another film successful is often a daunting task and in the case of this film there are a few areas where it does not hold up as well at its predecessor. With its most glaring flaw being its draw out narrative that features many moments that should have been left on the cutting floor. This also extends to the pacing as there are a few lulls along the way. And when it comes to positives they include, strong performances from the cast, solid visuals and an interesting premise.
For Men Only! and School for Sex come on a 50 GB dual layer (45 GB) BluRay. For Men Only! has been flagged for progressive playback and the film is presented in its intended 1.33:1 aspect ratio. School for Sex is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. The stronger of these two transfers is, For Men Only! and though they both transfers leave room for improvement. It is unlikely these films are going to look much better considering their rarity.
Each film comes with one audio option, a LPCM audio mix in English. Background noise is minimal, dialog comes through clearly and everything sounds balanced. Range wise things sound very limited.
Extras for this release include, a trailer for School for Sex (2 minutes 58 seconds), School for Sex alternate “Continental” footage (13 minutes 35 seconds), an interview with screenwriter / director Pete Walker titled Get Cheeky, with Pete Walker (8 minutes 48 seconds) and Glamour Loops also directed by Peter Walker (62 minutes 59 seconds, projector sound only).
The alternate footage is essentially a clothed version of the film. The main feature included as part of this release is the nudity version of the film.
Topics discussed in the interview with Pete Walker include, his career in stand up comedy, how he got involved in making 8mm loop’s, how taught himself how to make films, For Men Only! and what inspired him to make this film, School for Sex and hot verses soft versions of this film and his thoughts of the films he was making in the latter half of the 1960’s. Overall Peter Walkers early films are given the four-star treatment from Jezebel.
Note: This film is also being released by Kino Lorber / Redemption Films on DVD.
