Synopsis: Karen (Zoe Moonshine) has recently moved to New York City from South Africa. She finds a room for rent with a young woman named Christine (Ruby LaRocca) who takes candid photos of people peeing for a living. Christine spies on Karen one evening and tapes her masturbating. Karen embarrassed and not wanting anyone else to see the tape does what she is told to by Christine for fear of her wrath. Christine continues to push Karen even though her mind is starting to crack. Has Christine gone too far with her childish games and has she awakened a monster that will ultimately destroy her.
Director William Hellfire with The Devil’s Bloody Plaything wanted to create something catastrophic like Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and what he ended up making was a film closer to the Barbet Schroeder’s Single White Female. Hellfire has honed his style as director as it feels more natural and not a forced as it had in his previous films. To his credit he does manage to create some wonderfully creepy and tense moments. Zoe moonshine is the character Karen is pretty good in the role as she effortlessly transforms from victim to cold blooded killer. The other actress Ruby LaRocca is a completely different story as she comes off to ruff around the edges. Sure her Character is supposed to be rude and controlling which is what she did well. The thing I didn’t like about her performance was how unlikable she is from the moment she appears until her final demise. All characters should have something that is likeable about them or why would anyone watching care about them.
Overall The Devil’s Bloody Plaything never quite achieves its lofty goals as a film and the end result is disappointing.
The DVD:
The Devil’s Bloody Plaything is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. For a shot on video production detail look reasonably sharp. Colors and flesh tones look accurate. The source material used is in great shape with no problems with the transfer overall.
