The Drive-In Collection returns with three softcore films of director Don Davis.
Marsha The Erotic Housewife: Marsha Jordan wants the American dream: husband, children, cozy little apartment. What happens when she discovers he’s been carrying on a long term affair with his secretary? Will Marsha be content as a ‘part-time’ wife? This is a competent little melodrama and Marsha portrays the lead character well. There is surprisingly little skin on display for a movie of it’s type; seems that most scenes stop abruptly just as they begin to get going. That may not be a bad thing as most of the sex scenes are integral to the plot and they never outstay their welcome.
For Single Swingers Only: This one is the exact opposite as there is no plot, merely the situation of two female roommates who move into a swingers apartment complex. There is bountiful flesh on display here, male and female (no full frontal) but mostly natural bibbity bobbities. There is nearly always a sexual encounter going on while we cut back and forth to expositional scenes or to the assistant manager peeking in the windows or at times to two or more concurrent sex scenes. This film is much more successful that you might think, quite engaging and it certainly delivers the goods. The women vary in appearance from average to knockout, especially men’s magazine model Sharon Wells who could poke your eyes out with her torpedoes.
Her Odd Tastes: Marsha Jordan is featured in a world-wide search for ultimate pleasure. Though played straight throughout, this is one way-out and hilarious adventure. In between stock travelogue footage that introduces each new exotic locale we are subjected to some seriously mind-bending shenanigans. Best to begin this experience just as innocent and naive as Marsha does to fully enjoy the alternate universe as it unfolds. Blond SoCal model Terri Johnson can be spotted briefly.
All three features are presented full-screen in color from acceptable prints. The colors for Marsha are decidedly on the red side and could have used some color correction, though skin tones are better presented in the other two features. All three exhibit some wear, especially near reel changes. Vinegar Syndrome is obviously picking up the gauntlet left by the late Mike Vraney of Something Weird Video by presenting obscure sexploitation features in updated releases.
A strong case could be made that Marsha The Erotic Housewife was a key inspiration for Anna Biller’s Viva, but For Single Swingers is a text book example of what a sexploitation entertainment should be. Her Odd Tastes rises above the primitive sets to deliver some truly unexpected situations. This is the rare triple feature where the whole is more that the sum of its parts.
