Two Bob Chinn hardcore features from 79 aren’t exactly ‘prestige’ pictures but feature some big names, a few relatively unknown actresses, and high production values (for the genre).

Hot Legs: This is an example of a movie that is rather light on plot but still features adequate characterization to bring the sex scenes into the narrative. Richard Pacheco is the primary character trying to get that ad campaign out by the deadline but running headlong into numerous obstacles as the staff become less and less dependable (they are all sex maniacs). His part seems culled from those old Warner Brothers putting on a show musicals. Jesie St. James is the star of the film, but she still has the figure of a boy. It’s surprising they didn’t team her with R.J. Reynolds.

The six sex scenes are all over the place in terms of set design from realistic to apocalyptic roller-skate disco which brings some diversity to the proceedings but does challenge the overall composition of the story arc. Still, this is a hardcore production where one can even bother to ponder such matters which is impressive in itself. Sharon Kane looks natural if a bit disheveled in her ‘real world’ scenes though she is subjected to the 80’s porn star glamour treatment in her fantasies. Did women ever really aspire to look like that? Yes, I remember, but did they really want to?

California Gigolo: Don’t even bother to ponder such matters with this one – this is pure product. John Holmes always preferred boys to girls and was never was satisfied unless it was anal but leading lady Liza Dwyer really does look like a man – is that 5 o’clock shadow? I guess not, she’s a real girl, but he’s still got to do the coal chute anyway. He back doors two other women and there is one other scene featuring Don Fernando with Kitty Shane and her horrendous off-the-rack boob job. Yes, it’s filmed well on a technical level, but c’mon Bob.

The DVD:

Vinegar Syndrome restores two features from 35mm camera negatives in 1.85:1 OAR widescreen aspect.

Not every hardcore film has existing source elements to enable this high level of excellence in presentation, but these features look like a million bucks.
