Synopsis: After reading about the forbidden secrets of the Kamasutra. A British librarian living in China reconnects with a former life.
Chinese Kamasutra was directed by Joe D’Amato a prolific Italian filmmaker, who’s soft core erotica films from the 1970′s are arguably some of the best Italian sleaze / exploitation films from that era. Most notably the Emanuelle film’s with Laura Gemser. Unfortunately since the early 1980′s the quality of film’s saw a steady decline as he eventually made the transition to hardcore adult cinema.
Content wise Chinese Kamasutra is nothing more than a loosely constructed series of erotica rendezvous. That only serve as padding to what is a very weak plot. The film is poorly paced and the acting (dubbing) is atrocious. This film’s only assets are its leading lady Georgia Emerald (in her first and only film to date) and the film’s beautiful photography takes full advantage of its exotic locations. Overall Chinese Kamasutra is a tedious and uneventful film that lacks the sexual intensity that was rampant in Joe D’Amato’s most fertile era of filmmaking the late 1970′s.
The DVD:
One 7 Movies presents Chinese Kamasutra in a 1.66:1 letterboxed widescreen. This appears to be the film’s intended aspect ratio. The image never looks cramped. This transfer does not look like it was sourced from film elements. And even though there are no major issues with print damage or any other source related defects. There are several other areas in which this transfer comes up short. Colors tend to fluctuate, bleak levels generally look weak and the image consistently looks soft.
This release comes with two audio options, a Dolby Digital Stereo mix in English and a Dolby Digital Stereo mix in Italian (no English subtitles). Even though the Italian audio mix sounds cleaner of the two audio mixes. It also sounds weaker range wise then the English audio mix. The English audio mix has noticeable background noise that varies in degree throughout. Also I found myself adjusting the volume since the dialog at times sounds muffled.
Extras for this release are limited a deleted scene (44 seconds – 4:3 full frame, in English). Overall Chinese Kamasutra gets a mediocre audio / video presentation from One 7 Movies.
