Synopsis: A young woman named Christina is thrown out of her home when her father objects to her promiscuous ways. Shortly after her first sexual encounter she discovers that she is pregnant with child. After the birth of her son Christina is forced to sell herself in hopes of raising the money needed to pay for the operation that will save his life.
The plot for The Chick’s Ability is knee deep in melodrama. The plot is filled with several colorful characters like an aging prostitute and her muscular pimp who befriended Christina when she first arrived in town and a transvestite named Lili Marlene who becomes a mother like figure in Christina’s life. Two other more characters that also play an important role is Christina’s journey are a nurse named Laura and her artist boyfriend Marcos, who ends up falling in love with Christina.
The film’s numerous sex scenes all sizzle with eroticism. The most surprising asset this film has is its visual style. The way every scene is intricately shot and edited for maximum effect. One of the best examples of this is when Christina is giving birth and shots of the sexual encounter that lead to her pregnancy are inter-cut together. Another strong asset is the infectious score for the film.
The film’s two lead actresses Helena Ramos and Vanessa Alves spend most of the film showing off their ample assets. The film’s standout performance comes from Helena Ramos as Laura the jealousy girlfriend. Vanessa Alves is also very effective as the naive Christina. The film’s most memorable moment is a scene where Christina sells her body to help raise money for her sick son. The “John” who has paid for her ends up being ruff and she becomes hysterical causing him to flee. Ultimately The Chick’s Ability is an intoxicating mix of carnal delights and depravity.
Impulse Pictures presents The Chick’s Ability in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio that preserves the film’s original aspect ratio. The opening credits are presented in a window boxed ratio that has black bars around all four sides. This transfer has been flagged for progressive playback. The quality varies with colors, flesh tones and black levels faring well throughout. While there is some minor print damage it is never excessive or distracting and edge enhancement while noticeable is kept to a minimum.
This release comes with one audio option a Dolby Digital mono mix in Portuguese and removable English subtitles have been included. The audio is in good shape as the mix sounds clean, clean and free of any major audio defects. The film’s core benefits the most from this audio mix.
Outside of a static menu that allows three options play film, chapter selection and English subtitle option. The only extra included with this release is a text related piece about Brazilian cinemas Pornochanchada genre. The Chick’s Ability is the first in a series of Classic Erotic Latin cinema that are planned for release from Impulse Picture’s with the next release being a film titled Violence and Flesh. Overall Impulse Picture’s gives The Chick’s Ability a rarely seen Brazilian erotica film a well rounded DVD release.
