Content wise this film does not bring anything to the genre that has to been done before and many instances done better. And besides the predictable plot, the film is populated with the stereotypical characters which have become synonymous with the romantic comedy genre. With that being said, it was refreshing at least to see this scenario from the male’s point of view, instead on the all too familiar female point of view that dominates this genre.
From a production stand point this film is a well oiled machine as the film’s visuals do a good job focusing on the elements that are most important in getting this film’s message across and thankfully pacing is never an issue as things are constantly moving at a briskly towards this film’s inevitable conclusion.
Performance wise the majority of the cast are surprisingly engaging in their respective roles, especially Chad Michael Murray (‘One Tree Hill’) who gives a solid portrayal of a young man named Jay that has no trouble luring in any girl he sets his sights on. On the other end of the spectrum is Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) in the role of this film’s protagonist a character who is having the opposite effect that Jay is having with the ladies. It is a touch sale believing the evolution of his characters relationship with this film’s main female character Tess, who is superbly portrayed by Camilla Belle (When a Stranger Calls). Ultimately cons out way the pros in Cavemen, which is at best a mildly entertaining romantic comedy.
Cavemen comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. Details look sharp throughout, black levels look consistently strong, colors and flesh tones look accurate. Overall this is a well authored disc that does a great job retaining this films intended look.
This release comes with two audio options, a DTS-HD 5.1 mix in English and a Dolby Digital Stereo mix in English. Both audio mixes sound clean, clear and balanced. The DTS-HD 5.1 offers a slightly fuller sound palette which also does a very good with the more ambient aspects of this soundtrack. Also included with this release are removable English SDH subtitles.
Extras are limited to a trailer for the film and trailers for other titles also available from Well Go USA. Overall Cavemen gets a solid audio / video presentation from Well Go USA.
Note: This film is also being released by Well Go USA on DVD.
