Two adult features directed by Carlos Tobalina with assistance from Sharon Thorpe.
Carnal Haven, from 1975 is as by the numbers faithful to the three pronged Supreme Court Miller obscenity test as any feature from the ‘porno chic’ era. The story structure is rather unusual if not unique, with three basic arcs and then a few extra scenes tacked on to pad it out. Part 1 is vignettes of different couples featuring their lackluster (at best) sexual and personal relationships. In Part 2 the couples undergo sex therapy which, after a brief lecture, requires them all to participate in an orgy. Part 3, of course, is the newly energized relationships now made whole and exciting due to rampant sex. These scenes are rapid cut and jump all over over the place, but the ‘climatic’ seven money shots in a row montage is a jaw-dropping presentation.
That first part is most unusual as the couples struggle with their physical and emotional relationships. Apparently it was determined that it would be too mundane and off-putting, so clips of the orgy scene are inter-cut throughout, never mind that the orgy hadn’t even happened as yet.
The biggest draw to Carnal Haven is seeing three iconic stars in early feature film appearances: Leslie Bovee, Candida Royalle, and John Leslie Dupre. John Leslie, especially, is rather charming prior to becoming a rough and randy rapist in many of his early roles. Annette Haven does not appear in the primary storyline but in a later threesome lesbian therapy session.
Her Last Fling does follow a more traditional linear storyline; a young woman is diagnosed with two weeks left to live, so she goes coast to coast from one orgy to the next. And that’s what we see, seemingly endless footage from three orgies (perhaps more, who could tell?) interspersed with brief travelogue shots of San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York City. Sandy Pinney plays the title character and presumably provides voiceovers for her street scenes. Performers include Annette Haven, Candida Royalle, Paul Thomas, and John Holmes.
Two more superior quality OAR widescreen adult presentations featuring early appearances of iconic stars from the mid seventies.
If orgies are your cup of tea then this double feature experience will be nirvana. For every one else it’s more likely to be a perplexing jumble of unidentifiable body parts and orifices.
