Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield is a prequel to Brotherhood of Blades. And though, both films share the same protagonist Shen Lian an imperial guard who works for the secret police. The narrative for Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield digs deeper into Shen Lian’s background by depicting the events that led up to, the events that unfold in Brotherhood of Blades.
From a production standpoint, there is not an area where this film is lacking. The narrative is well executed and pacing is never an issue as there a deliberate momentum to the narrative. And though there are an ample amount of action set pieces. When it comes to the action set pieces and more dramatic moments, this film finds a very satisfying balance.
Not to be overlooked, when discussing this film are its rock-solid visuals. With standout moments visually being the scene where Shen Lian goes with another imperial guard to arrest Bei Zhai and the scene where Shen Lian finally discovers who is behind the coup to overthrow the government.
Performance wise the entire cast are all superb in their respective roles. With this film’s strongest performance coming from Chen Chang (Happy Together, Red Cliff) in the role of Shen Lian. He delvers a solid performance that is on par with his performance from Brotherhood of Blades. Other stand out performances of note are Mi Yang (Painted Skin: The Resurrection, Reset) in the role of Bei Zhai, an artist who is linked to those trying to overthrow the government and Zhang Yi (Eastern Bandits, Mountains May Depart) in the role of Shen Lian’s superior officer Lu Wenzhao.
Though, Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield features many of the same elements and themes theme’s that were explored in Brotherhood of Blades. The end result is a highly entertaining film, that does not require one to have seen Brotherhood of Blades.
Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. Colors and flesh tones look accurate, details look sharp and black levels look strong throughout.
