Abduction of an American Playgirl: Two dudes on the prowl for some strange can’t even spring for dinner, so they kidnap a broad in full daylight!

Technically this is a roughie, but it’s actually more a screwball comedy. Not only is it funny and compelling, it’s one of the best scripted, paced, filmed, and varied mid-seventies hardcore features to reach home video to date. And for the first hour it’s entirely a one-woman show.

That woman is Darby Lloyd Rains and, nearing the end of her career, she gives it her all and pulls it off quite well. She is snatched by the Martin/Lewis type buddies played by Eric Edwards and Alan Marlow, but her insatiable desires quickly turn the hunters into prey. The situation becomes surreal due to the inherent absurdities that are made strangely believable by the excellent performances from Rains and especially Eric Edwards. So the film traverses the difficult and rarified terrain of the roughie comedy, a sub-genre earlier explored by Jack Hill with Mondo Keyhole.

The photography seldom ventures into the extreme close-ups that degradate so many features of the era, here the primary focus is on the story and the situation rather than the sex acts themselves; they are merely a faction of the whole. It’s certainly a mystery why there is no director credit on this title, as this is definitely a diamond in the rough.

Winter Heat: This one is a roughie, with three women dominated by a gang led by Jamie Gillis. Gillis could play light and funny or dark and psychotic as the role required, and here he’s not a nice man. This is intrusion and assault of the lowest order, from three men and one woman against three hapless women. Two of the latter are rather good at appearing genuinely humiliated, distraught, and violated by the criminal deviants; the other lassie just seems to go with the flow.

The DVD:

Abduction is sourced from a 35mm negative and looks amazing. The trailer is under the alternate ‘Plowgirl’ title, and overuses the undercranked sex scene, incorporating it in several places though it only appears once in the feature. Winter Heat is sourced from a theatrical print and suffers from some wear and damage. It’s not bad, really, but suffers in comparison with the elements for Abduction.

The quality of the feature and the excellent presentation makes Abduction Of An American Playgirl a must-have for purveyors of fine adult entertainment. Winter Heat, however, is strictly for the trenchcoat crowd.
