“I think I am an arranger, not an author. Because I don’t have a base, my approach to making a film is also like bringing something to me that is from a different place.” -Takashi Miike

Takashi Miike was born on 24th August 1960 in Osaka, Japan. His love for motorbike’s placed him into the world of auto mechanics before racing them as an amateur. When an advertisement for Yokohama Vocational School of Broadcast and Film caught his attention he quickly applied since he was going nowhere racing motorbikes.

Uninterested in the aspects of filmmaking Miike would frequently cut class and paid little attention while he was there.Luck would intervene landing Miike a job as assistant director on an episode of the TV series Black Jack. Working on Television Mikke had finally found his niche working on 30 to 40 shows a year for seven years. By the early 1990’s he would shift from television into film working first as an assistant director before moving into the directors chair.

Miike would spend his first four years directing straight to video features before landing the film 1995′s Shinjuku Triad Society his first theatrical feature film. Miike since then has spent the last ten years working at a prolific pace and sometimes as a director for hire. His films usually revolve around violence and his dark sense of humor, still there is no denying that these films could have been by anyone else.

Miike’s biggest international success top date is his 1999 film the Audition which is already being hailed as a modern day horror masterpiece. Miike keeps the auteur theory alive through his unique style of filmmaking by exploring human nature through its deepest darkest obsessions.
