Best DVD / BluRay releases of 2011
Written by: on December 17th, 2011

Another year with a lot of great releases this year and narrowing down the choices was not an easy task. Now without further ado here are 10kbullets picks for best releases for the year 2011

Daughters of Darkness – BluRay (Blue Underground)
“Harry Kümel’s Daughters of Darkness is one of the great examples of what a classic exploitation film should be with its blood soaked scenes of carnage and sexual escapades.” - Michael Den Boer

Lorna The Exorcist (Mondo Macabro)
“Ultimately Lorna The Exorcist is a well made erotic thriller. That flawlessly mixes erotica with its more supernatural moments.”Michael Den Boer

Embodiment of Evil – BluRay / DVD Combo (Synapse Films)
“This is a pretty sick flick. The extreme torture scenes are not only disgusting, but totally gratuitous as well.”Carroll Jenkins

Confessions – BluRay (Third Window Films)
“Confessions is easily Tetsuya Nakashima’s most gut wrenching film to date. Whether it be the film’s subdued colors or melancholy score / soundtrack (which includes the Radiohead song ‘Last Flowers’), this film excels.” – Michael Den Boer

The Image – BluRay (Synapse Films)
“Besides the aforementioned moments of depravity. Another area in which this production excels includes it’s picturesque visuals which uses the Paris locations for maximum effect.”Michael Den Boer

Cold Fish – BluRay (Third Window Films)
“At just under 2 1/2 hours this film covers a lot ground and then some. And like Shion Sono’s previous films there is plenty of subtext that can be gleaned from the story at hand. Also the use of subversive humor is present throughout.”Michael Den Boer

Obsession – BluRay (Arrow Video)
“Ultimately Obsession is a well made romantic thriller that has all cinematic bravado and visual flare that has become synonymous with the film’s of Brian De Palma.”Michael Den Boer

Once Upon a Time in The West – BluRay (Paramount Pictures)
“Overall Once Upon a Time in The West is truly a landmark that we are likely to never see the likes of such a film ever again.”Michael Den Boer

Mondo Candido - (Camera Obscura)
“There are far too many deliriously absurd moments which unfold in this film that trying to catalog all of them would be futile.”Michael Den Boer

The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann – (Video X Pix)
“Ultimately, while most filmmakers would have been content to stay in their niche, it is remarkable just how The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann holds up after all these years, especially when ones takes into account that this was a transitional film from one of cinemas greatest purveyors of smut.”Cliff Wood

In a Glass Cage – BluRay (Cult Epics)
“Ultimately In a Glass Cage is a grueling cinematic experience that is sure to leave indelible mark of your psyche.”Michael Den Boer

Wild Beasts – (Camera Obscura)
“Content wise, Wild Beasts is far from being as graphic in its cruelty as the aforementioned Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox. And on the flip side it is not as clever about delivering its subject matter like films Africa addio and Goodbye Uncle Tom where. Ultimately Wild Beasts falls somewhere in between these two extremes.”Michael Den Boer

Tokyo Drifter – BluRay
(Criterion Collection)
“Ultimately Tokyo Drifter is a visually opulent tale in which logic takes a back seat and caution is thrown to the wind, as Seijun Suzuki sublime style of storytelling takes us from one bizarre set piece to another.”Michael Den Boer

Branded to Kill – BluRay (Criterion Collection)
“Ultimately Branded to Kill is an extraordinary film that was made by a filmmaker, who was light years ahead of his contemporaries. And will many have tried to imitate it, none have been able to match its boldness and inventiveness. If ever there was a desert island film, that film would be Branded to Kill.”Michael Den Boer
